Officially, the Family and Medical Leave Act (29 USC 2601) entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms as if such employee had not taken leave.
The law applies to public agencies and private sector employers who employ 50 or more employees within a 75-mile radius. The FMLA entitles employees to 12 workweeks of leave in a given year for:
